HOW DO YOU GET YOUR PROBLEM LOOKED AT IF IT MAY BE A NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER? Your first port of call if you live in Australia should always be your family doctor. They are trained to look at the complete range of medical symptoms, deal with them if they are within their expertise and refer you to a specialist if they are not or if they become more complex as time goes on. Depending on your symptoms, it may be appropriate to refer you to one or another specialist. For example, with blackouts, it may be appropriate to refer you to a neurologist, cardiologist or both. You family doctor can help determine with you the best way to proceed.

HOW DO YOU GET YOUR PROBLEM LOOKED AT IF IT MAY BE A SLEEP DISORDER? Your first port of call if you live in Australia should always be your family doctor. They are trained to ask you about your sleep symptoms deal with them if they are within their expertise and refer you to a specialist if they are not or if they become more complex as time goes on. Referral will usually be to a sleep specialist who are doctors specially trained in the area of sleep medicine. Most of these doctors also practice in other areas, for example, neurology and respiratory medicine. Depending on your symptoms, it may even be appropriate for you to see a second sleep specialist who has expertise in a specialised area within sleep medicine. It is all part of the process of getting you to see the best person for advice about your problem.

HOW DO I GET TO SEE DR KING Dr King sees patients in his rooms at Lindfield in the northern suburbs of Sydney. You need to see your family doctor, get a referral letter and telephone his secretary to make an appointment. For appointments call 02 9416 1607. Make sure you know if your doctor wants a consultation or test or both and if a test the name of it. Address details will be provided by the secretary and they are in the Yellow Pages under Medical Practitioners. You can then find the location at www.whereis.com.au

NERVE CONDUCTION STUDIES. WHAT HAPPENS? If you have been advised by your doctor to book a nerve conduction study, please clarify at the time whether or not your doctor wants you to have a nerve conduction study only or a consultation as well. Dr King's time and equipment allocation depends entirely on what you are booked in for and so if you have booked a nerve conduction study only but your doctor wants a consultation as well then you may have to come back on another day for the consultation. This could involve a wait of several weeks until the next consultation appointment is available. Whether or not you come back on another day there are separate charges for the two things.

CONSULTATIONS. WHAT HAPPENS? If you have been advised by your doctor to book in to see Dr King please clarify at the time whether or not your doctor wants you to have a consultation, test or both. You need to know this information when you telephone to make an appointment so that Dr King's time and equipment can be allocated appropriately.

EEG. WHAT HAPPENS? If you have been advised by your doctor to book an EEG, please clarify at the time whether or not your doctor wants you to have an EEG only or a consultation as well. Dr King's time and equipment allocation depends entirely on what you are booked in for and so if you have booked an EEG only but your doctor wants a consultation as well then you may have to come back on another day for the consultation. This could involve a wait of several weeks until the next consultation appointment is available. Whether or not you come back on another day there are separate charges for the two things.
